長毛兔仔兔出生時無毛，從第四天開始長毛，毛生長得非常迅速。據(jù)測定，發(fā)育正常的全耳毛幼兔，出生1個月齡時，粗毛長度達4.2厘米；細毛長度達2.8厘米，乳毛已全部形成；60日齡時，粗毛長度達7.5厘米，細毛長度達4.5厘米；90日齡時，毛纖維的生長速度與成年兔一樣，每晝夜細毛的生長速度平均為0. 6-0.7毫米。剪毛后的成年兔，被毛再生長到符合優(yōu)級品質的長度約需75-90天。因此，長毛兔一年可剪毛4-5次。實驗證明，毛用兔的產(chǎn)毛量與綿羊相比，單位體重產(chǎn)毛量比綿羊高2-3倍，而所需的營養(yǎng)卻是綿羊的1/3。
